Pair of ex-Jayhawks agree with teams

Two former Kansas University baseball players tapped in the major-league baseball draft have agreed to terms with their teams.

Zach Ashwood signed with the Chicago Cubs, who picked him in the 16th round (487th overall), and Kyle Murphy came to terms with the Texas Rangers, who selected him in the 19th round (590th).

Ashwood will begin his professional career with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League. Boise is the Class-A affiliate of the Cubs.

The 6-foot-4 left-hander went 4-4 for Kansas during the 2007 season, making 12 starts and appearing in 16 games. The Colony, Texas, native posted a 5.77 earned-run average and 49 strikeouts in 64 innings. Ashwood spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at TCU.

Murphy, a 5-11 outfielder from Beloit, Wis., was one of nine players the Rangers signed Tuesday.

Murphy made his professional debut Tuesday night, going 0-for-2 for the Spokane Indians of the Northwest League. Spokane is a Class-A affiliate of the Rangers.

Murphy played two seasons for the Jayhawks, batting .332 this past season with four home runs, 15 doubles and 50 runs scored. He was one of the team’s most consistent producers throughout the season after being moved to the top of the lineup in late February. From March 16 to the end of the season, Murphy’s batting average never dropped below .300.
