While you’re at it, get interior in tip-top shape, too

While you’re giving the outside of your car a good cleaning, you might as well detail the inside, too.

DMV.org, a car-related Web site, offers these tips for tidying up your auto’s interior:

¢ Vacuum your carpets and upholstery thoroughly, then remove stains with a stain remover and brush. For mild stains, dilute the solution with water in a spray bottle, using a little moisture as possible to prevent mildew. Clean floor mats with a stiff brush and lay them outside to dry.

¢ For door jambs, open the car door and wipe the metal and plastic parts with a soapy solution. Dry them thoroughly with a rag and use smaller tools, such as cotton swabs or brushes to remove tougher stains and spots.

¢ Clean the noncloth portions of your door interiors with a soapy solution. Especially pay attention to the cracks and crevices. Dry the entire area with a thick cloth.

¢ Use glass cleaner or a soapy solution on the windows.

¢ Use a soapy solution to remove dust and stains on your steering wheel column. Dry thoroughly, then apply a surface protectant to the entire surface.

¢ For the dashboard and center console, don’t spray water or cleaning solution. Instead, use small-area tools and apply the cleaning solution to the tool itself and clean around knobs and buttons.

¢ Use a plastic knife covered with a thin cloth to get deeper into crevices.

¢ Use canned air to blow dust from cracks.

¢ Remove pet hair from seats and carpets by running masking tape or duct tape around your hand, sticky side out, and running your hand over the surfaces.
