From the Lawrence Daily World for June 18, 1907: “Secretary Taft’s friends are saying he will retire from the presidential race because of his health and the fact he does not like the kind of fierce fighting that seems to be growing in politics. : Lawrence ministers are supporting Ottawa colleagues in their opposition to charging for chautauqua activities on a Sunday. They consider that a wide-open Sabbath and feel it is demeaning. : Robinson’s Great Shows circus is due here July 2 and it is rated as one of the finest shows of its kind in the country. It will be a holiday treat, we are told. : Several farmers’ houses have been robbed of late and officials feel sure the same person or persons are involved in all the crimes. The marshal is checking and putting extra men on duty. Several boys are suspected.”
