Sosa slams 599th home run

Rangers 7, Reds 6

Cincinnati – Sammy Sosa hit a grand slam for his 599th career home run. The 38-year-old slugger is one homer away from a mark that only four others have reached – Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. He ended an 18-game homer drought with his first grand slam since Sept. 15, 2004.

Slammin’ Sammy took his customary hop in the fifth inning after the ball left his bat and headed for right field, where Ken Griffey Jr. briefly gave chase before pulling up and watching Sosa’s latest memorable moment in Cincinnati.

Sosa hit his 500th – again, to right field – four games after Great American Ball Park opened in 2003.

Mets 2, Yankees 0

New York – Oliver Perez outdueled Roger Clemens, giving the New York Mets a badly needed victory and stopping the Yankees’ winning streak at nine. Perez limited the Yankees to five hits in 71â3 innings, Jose Reyes homered and Carlos Gomez leapt to prevent a three-run homer by Miguel Cairo.

Tigers 12, Phillies 8

Philadelphia – Ivan Rodriguez drove in five runs, and Sean Casey had four hits and three RBIs to help Jeremy Bonderman stay unbeaten.

Pirates 4, White Sox 2

Pittsburgh – Paul Maholm pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, and Pittsburgh handed Chicago its ninth loss in 10 games. Maholm broke a personal five-game losing streak, and Jose Bautista and Xavier Nady each drove in two runs for the Pirates, who have won three of four during a six-game interleague homestand.

Maholm (3-9) scattered eight baserunners while throwing 108 pitches – he walked three batters and hit two – as the Pirates won for the fourth time in his 14 starts this season.

He was erratic early, loading the bases with one out in the first on two walks and a Jermaine Dye single to left. A.J. Pierzynski’s sacrifice fly to center scored Andy Gonzalez, but Maholm shut down the White Sox over the next six innings.

Braves 5, Indians 4

Cleveland – Yunel Escobar’s two-run double in the ninth inning sent Atlanta past Cleveland. Casey Blake extended his hitting streak to 24 games with a tiebreaking homer in the eighth for Cleveland, but C.C. Sabathia (10-2) couldn’t make it stand up. Cleveland’s ace left-hander yielded a leadoff double to Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the ninth – Atlanta’s first extra-base hit after 10 singles.

Blue Jays 7, Nationals 2

Toronto – Troy Glaus and Adam Lind homered, Roy Halladay won consecutive starts for the first time in more than a month. Halladay (7-2) gave up two runs on seven hits over 71â3 innings, striking out six and walking one. He hadn’t won back-to-back starts since April 24 and 30.

Lind hit a two-run homer in the fourth, his seventh, off starter Mike Bacsik. Glaus followed three batters later with an RBI double that made it 3-0. Glaus hit his 11th homer in the sixth, a solo blast off reliever Winston Abreu.

Red Sox 10, Giants 2

Boston – Barry Bonds is 742 homers ahead of Dustin Pedroia on the all-time list, but the diminutive Red Sox rookie can make a claim that the would-be home run king can’t: He’s homered at Fenway Park.

Playing for the first time in Babe Ruth’s first major-league ballpark, Bonds went 1-for-3 and failed to gain ground on Hank Aaron despite a long fly ball that was inches foul of being No. 748.

Diamondbacks 7, Orioles 3

Baltimore – Pinch hitter Orlando Hudson homered with two on to cap a five-run eighth inning, and Arizona ended a four-game losing streak. Chris Snyder also homered in the eighth for the Diamondbacks.

Astros 5, Mariners 1

Houston – Mike Lamb had four hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in three runs to lead Houston. Seattle lost its third straight after a season-high five-game winning streak.

Brewers 11, Twins 3

Minneapolis – Geoff Jenkins hit a grand slam, and Prince Fielder added a two-run shot to power Milwaukee. The victory extended Milwaukee’s win streak to three games, its first three game winning streak since reeling off six in a row from May 4-9.

Rockies 12, Devil Rays 2

Denver – Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe hit back-to-back homers in the first, and James Shields lost for the first time this season. It was the second straight night the Rockies handed a pitcher his first loss of the season. Colorado beat Boston’s Josh Beckett on Thursday night.

Athletics 14, Cardinals 3

Oakland, Calif. – Dan Haren won his eighth consecutive decision, spoiling St. Louis manager Tony La Russa’s return to Oakland. Bobby Crosby and Jason Kendall each drove in a pair of runs during a six-run third-inning, and Dan Johnson added a three-run homer in the seventh as every A’s starter had at least one hit against the Cardinals’ struggling staff.

Dodgers 2, Angels 1

Los Angeles – Derek Lowe allowed one run over seven innings and had a career-high 11 strikeouts. Lowe (7-6) allowed four hits and walked one. The right-hander went the distance last Saturday in a 1-0 loss to Toronto at Dodger Stadium, one of three complete-game defeats this season by Lowe.

Cubs 4, Padres 1

Chicago – Mike Fontenot and Alfonso Soriano homered off David Wells in the sixth inning.
