Douglas County Dist. Atty. Mike Malone said two juvenile suspects in the past week’s murder of a Lawrence carpenter, Don Hatchell, 50, were in custody but for reasons unrelated to the murder. Yet Malone said he still considered the two, a boy and a girl, “prime suspects” in the killing.

Morris Kay, a Lawrence man and Kansas Republican chairman, confirmed he would run for the GOP nomination for the 2nd District congressional seat. The post was being vacated by the resignation of Atchison Republican Jim Jeffries. Democrat Jim Slattery of Topeka was considered Kay’s chief opponent in the race.
