ABC returns to ‘Kyle XY’

For the second summer season, ABC will air repeats of the Family Channel drama “Kyle XY” (7 p.m., ABC). It used to work the other way around, where the networks created original programming and let the cable networks air the repeats. ABC pioneered this reverse trend some summers back, when it carried repeat episodes of the USA comedy “Monk.”

“Kyle” is a gifted and attractive teen with a great big secret. He appeared from out of nowhere, alone in the woods, naked as a newborn and covered in some kind of goo. And he didn’t have a navel.

Adopted by a therapist and her family, he proved to be a genius of extraordinary capacity. As season two begins, Kyle discovers the story of his origins and of the people behind his story, and of the people who will do anything, and kill anybody, to keep his identity a secret.

“Kyle” has the ingredients of a fine family drama. It perfectly captures the “Where did I come from and what am I doing here?” mysteries of adolescent angst. What teenager doesn’t feel like the man (or the woman) who fell to Earth?

Friday nights used to be filled with such programming, before game shows, news magazines and reality fare cluttered the dial. “Kyle” joins cable programs like “The 4400,” “Eureka,” “Monk” and other family-appropriate cable shows that are every bit as good as anything on network.

¢ New episodes of “Man vs. Wild” (8 p.m., Discovery) return. Host and adventurer Bear Grylls shows viewers how to endure difficult conditions and how to escape forbidding conditions.

In tonight’s installment, Grylls, a veteran of the British Special Forces, drops into the Florida Everglades, where he slogs his way through hip-deep water. He shows how to climb tall trees with the help of common shoelaces; how to fend off starvation by eating bugs and one unlucky turtle, and most importantly, how to avoid snakes, alligators and bears. Oh, my.

Next week: Grylls avoids starvation in a harsh Icelandic climate by eating a sheep’s eyeballs. He said the turtle really did “taste like chicken.” Can’t wait to hear how he describes the Icelandic delicacy. Bon appetit!

¢ The series “Our Generation” (5:30 p.m., History) continues its weekly examination of the Baby Boomer years. This week: “Fly With Me” explores how the generation grew up with commercial aviation and the impact of frequent flying on culture and the economy.
