Sculpture safety

It is hoped a vandalized sculpture will be safe in its new home.

This isn’t the first year that outdoor sculptures have been vandalized in Lawrence’s downtown.

It would be wonderful, however, it if were the last.

After being knocked off its footings at another location two weeks ago, the “Prayer Booth” sculpture has been reinstalled near an entrance to the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St. Perhaps the location was chosen because of its proximity to local law enforcement officers. Or perhaps the structure – which has been described as a public prayer booth – will find a number of takers on their way to court appearances in the building.

At least, it is hoped, the sculpture now won’t be the subject of further vandalism. The rotating sculpture exhibit that is displayed in various downtown locations is a wonderful addition to our community. It adds visual interest to the area and often provides some food for thought for those who view it.

Vandals who idly damage such works don’t represent the bulk of community. It would be a shame if they are allowed to spoil an artistic tradition for the rest of us.
