Gates of area reservoirs were being gradually opened to allow the escape of the high water produced by the recent heavy rains. The Lawrence area was safe after the Kansas River had dropped substantially from a brief 18-foot flood stage, thanks largely to the water temporarily impounded at the Perry Reservoir.
