Vandalized sculpture returns downtown

Two weeks after it was vandalized in downtown, the sculpture “Prayer Booth” is back in the public eye – this time, near an entrance to the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St.

The sculpture was created by artist Dylan Mortimer, who also is a pastor in Kansas City, Mo. It has been displayed in other cities, including New York City, Chicago and Kansas City.

On May 28, Lawrence police were called after someone knocked over the sculpture, which was at Seventh and Massachusetts streets. The sculpture resembles an old telephone booth and is described as a public prayer booth.

The exhibit is one of eight pieces in the 2007 Outdoor Downtown Sculpture Exhibition, which will be in place until April, said John Reeves, a Lawrence architect and member of the Lawrence Arts Commission.
