‘Confusing’ parking meters frustrate visitor

David Pippen really wanted to talk about downtown parking.

Pippen drove from Kansas City, Mo., and waited five hours to talk about a $2 parking ticket he received downtown last week.

Pippen said he fed the meter, but when he got back he still had a yellow ticket. The problem: He put his money in the wrong meter.

When Pippen went to Lawrence Municipal Court to pay the ticket, a clerk there told him his story was common. On Tuesday he wanted to find out why city commissioners haven’t taken any action to resolve the issue.

“The meters are stunningly confusing for out-of-towners,” Pippen said. “I was having a really nice time in downtown, but that sort of ruins the consumer experience.”

Commissioners thanked Pippen for his comments, and directed staff to look at ways to improve meter signage. Commissioners also said they would consider creating a system where first-time parking offenders received a warning rather than an actual ticket for overtime parking downtown.
