Commissioners agree to ease budget cuts

City commissioners eased up slightly on their plans to cut the 2007 budget to deal with flagging revenues.

On a 3-2 vote, commissioners agreed to a list of 2007 budget cuts that will slice funding for city-funded social service agencies by 4 percent rather than the previously proposed 6 percent cut.

The change was proposed by Commissioner Rob Chestnut, who said the 4 percent cut was more in line with the true cut in operational costs that most city departments would be experiencing. The city is cutting about 6 percent from its general fund, but a sizable portion of that is not coming from true operational dollars but in a reduction of transfers to equipment reserve funds.
