Festival posters

June 11, 2007

To the editor:

I think we all should be impressed with the way the folks from the Wakarusa festival are defacing our public property (i.e., bus shelters) by putting up five to six posters on each. Considering the financial problems Lawrence is facing, perhaps we could charge them per poster plus the removal (which I assume they have no intention of doing)? I am trying to do my part as a taxpaying resident of this town by tearing the posters off of my (and your) bus shelters.

Andrew Stahmer,

Lawrence

    Worthless complaint.

single worst letter to the editor of all time? only time will tell.

Andrew probably also agrees with the city's policy on garage sale signs...where we pay city workers to drive around on Saturdays and take them down on overtime.

This is something that is done by concert promoters across the entire United States, and it not limited to people attending the Wakarusa festival.
You see, the whole point of marketing is to spread the word to the most amount of people possible by handing out fliers, hanging up posters, etc. if you notice throughout the entire town, there are concert ads everywhere. If there is a space for a sticker/poster then it will be there.
As a "taxpayer" (we are all taxpayers by the way), you should be worried about something of significant value. If you are concerned with posters hanging up in a bus shelter that promotes a concert... and a concert that provides a boom for the entire city...then you should probably just stop paying the taxes. or better yet? you could tear down the posters that you despise so much. Let's be constructive here!!!!!

Gee..lets not forget about the money the festival brings to Lawrence. Most people wait until arriving in Lawrence to purchase food to take back to their campsites...food from Lawrence grocery stores. And, upon leaving most of them gas up at Lawrence stations. If you don't like posters move to Johnson County.

someone has a problem with hippies.

    Lighten up, man.

Not a big deal. Tax statements are littering my mailbox, but you don't see me complaining, do ya?

Well, it's good to know that at least someone has his thumb on the pulse of an issue of vital importance to Lawrencians. And not only did Andrew take the time to write the JW to share his insights, he is single-handedly destroying the very objects posing such menacing threat to the pristine bus shelters of Lawrence.

You know, I think we should all follow Andrew's lead by ripping down those insidious and unsightly lost pet posters that mysteriously crop up on our otherwise lovely, unmarred telephone poles. After all, do the thoughtless criminals who post such notices actually remove them if they don't find their pet within, say, 48-hours? Such brazen lawlessness must be stopped at once!

  8. greengoblin (anonymous) says…

With you on that meggers....No, they don't remove them within 48 hours, and have you noticed all the missing pets require medication?

Those who work for established production companies often take down their own fliers and posters, as it allows more room to hang current ones, keeps their image clean, and prevents confusion about upcoming vs. past shows.

Andrew, I am sorry that the festival bothers you so much and, having taken this on as an economic point, it is unfortunate that you have not weighed this irritation against the economic boost of having thousands of tourists in our town, spending money in our local economy and paying sales taxes that help pay for services you and I enjoy year-round.

The saddening tone of this letter makes me want to go hug a stranger, just to reinforce that there is still a bit of love and tolerance in the world.

Andrew, I dare you to walk down Massachusetts St. and offer a high-five to a passer-by. I bet you'll get one.

Better yet, Andrew, shield your eyes from the bus shelters for a few days and explore these suggestions:

Your bravery knows no bounds, Andrew. In fact, it might only be matched only by your igno....oh, never mind.

Sleep well and don't worry, "loose" sleep can be quite entertaining sometimes...makes for more lucid dreams.
