Ex-Jayhawk Metcalf recalled

The Texas Rangers recalled former Kansas University third baseman Travis Metcalf back to the major-league club – and Rangers manager Ron Washington pledges to use him this time.

Washington told reporters before Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers that Metcalf will join the team today and be in the lineup for at least the next 10 days. Texas is without a mainstay at third base, with regular Hank Blalock on the disabled list.

Metcalf was called up last month, but spent just one weekend with the Rangers before being demoted back to double-A Frisco. He was 0-for-2 with two walks in his short stint.

Metcalf is one of three former Jayhawks playing in the Major Leagues currently. Tom Gorzelanny is one of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top starting pitchers, and Mike Zagurski is a reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies.
