Twins find success with long ball

Twins 8, Angels 5

Anaheim, Calif. – Nick Punto, Michael Cuddyer and Jason Bartlett homered, and Kevin Slowey lasted long enough to get his first major-league victory as Minnesota beat the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.

The Twins took advantage of a key error by shortstop Orlando Cabrera to stop a four-game losing streak.

The Angels had won five in a row.

Orioles 9, Mariners 5

Seattle – Jay Gibbons ended an 0-for-22 slide with two hits and started a five-run rally that helped Baltimore beat Seattle to stop a five-game losing streak.

The O’s bullpen, which failed to protect late leads the previous two nights, held on in the ninth.

Devil Rays 6, Blue Jays 2

Toronto – Carl Crawford drove in four runs, and Tampa Bay’s bullpen bounced back with a scoreless effort a night after giving up six runs in the ninth.

Yankees 5, White Sox 1

Chicago – Chien-Ming Wang pitched a five-hitter for New York’s first nine-inning complete game since last summer, and Alex Rodriguez and Bobby Abreu keyed the Yankees’ reviving offense in a victory over Chicago.

Wang (5-4) struck out four and walked one, throwing 104 pitches in New York’s first nine-inning complete game since he beat Tampa Bay with a two-hit shutout last July 28. He won for the fourth time in five starts.

Chicago (26-29) has lost nine of 11 and is fading fast in the AL Central.

Tigers 10, Rangers 0

Arlington, Texas – Gary Sheffield homered twice and drove in five runs, leading Justin Verlander and Detroit to a rout of plummeting Texas.

The Rangers have lost 11 of 14, leaving them with the worst record in the major leagues at 21-38.

Athletics 3, Red Sox 2

Oakland, Calif. – Joe Kennedy shut down Boston for seven innings, Bobby Crosby drove in two runs, and Oakland handed the Red Sox their season-high fourth straight loss.
