Residents of southern Lawrence awoke Thursday morning to the sound of hissing natural gas. But the release wasn't dangerous, an official with an area pipeline company said.
The loud noise around 7 a.m. this morning came from crews with Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline releasing pressure from a major transmission line that runs through the Baker Wetlands.
Bob Bath, a manager for the gas line company, said crews were releasing the pressure from the line so that workers in Ottawa could complete a relocation of a gas line in that community.
"There was no danger at all," Bath said.
The crews were at a small station the company has in the Baker Wetlands, just north of the Wakarusa River.
Bath said Thursday afternoon that crews were scheduled to make a similar noise later that evening as they purged the line in order for Ottawa workers to complete gas line installation.

I'm so happy to see that the LJW has finally decided to let the editors of The Onion write their headlines!

With a headline like that I was sure the story would be a recap of the last city commission election.

I thought it was the sound of the “Wakarusa Fest blow(ing) into town.” Yeah the headlines here are pretty laughable.

The smell would be a compound called Mercaptan which is added to natural gas so that you can detect the stuff.
Mercaptan is one of the stinkiest things on the planet.
Natural gas in its native state is colorless and odorless. Mercaptan is the harmless, non-toxic chemical that is added to natural gas to make it easier to detect in case of a leak. The most important thing to know about mercaptan is that it stinks. Some people compare it to the smell of rotten eggs.
In a concentrated form, the smell is almost unbearable, kinda like the hippies Downtown.
Thanks.
Marion.

I bike south on louisiana a few times a week (directly west of the wetlands) and there is always a smell and a faint sound.
