Hoffman collects 500th save
Padres closer keeps adding to all-time record

San Diego – There was no doubt for whom the heavy metal bells were tolling – Trevor Hoffman and his 500 career saves.
Hoffman became the first big leaguer to reach that plateau when he saved San Diego’s victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night.
Hoffman pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances this season. He jogged in from the bullpen accompanied by AC/DC’s ominous “Hells Bells” as usual.

Phoenix – Chris Young broke a scoreless tie with a home run to center field leading off the seventh inning, lifting surging Arizona past San Francisco.
Phillies 4, Mets 2
New York – Jimmy Rollins hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning, rallying Philadelphia and Mets nemesis Adam Eaton to a victory over New York.
Nationals 6, Pirates 5
Washington – Cristian Guzman scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch by Salomon Torres, and Washington ended a three-game losing streak.
Cubs 6, Brewers 2
Milwaukee – Carlos Zambrano controlled his temper and his pitches, and Chicago overcame Prince Fielder’s 21st home run to beat Milwaukee.
Felix Pie, in his second stint with the Cubs, hit a three-run homer in the second inning.
Marlins 7, Braves 4
Atlanta – Aaron Boone homered again, hitting a two-run shot, as Florida took three of four in the series.
Cardinals 6, Reds 4
St. Louis – Albert Pujols’ two-run homer snapped a seventh-inning tie, helping surging St. Louis beat Cincinnati.
David Eckstein added two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who have won six of seven and pulled five games behind first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.
Rockies 8, Astros 7
Denver – Brad Hawpe had a two-run tiebreaking triple to help Colorado beat Houston.
