Golfers frustrated by bluster

It was a windy Wednesday for golfers in the Kansas Golf Association Four-Ball Championship at Alvamar Golf Club.

The harsh gusts – at times reaching 50 mph – didn’t make any friends and even received a not-so-kind nickname from Adam Blue.

“Satan,” Blue said. “I mean, you’re practically almost blown over in the middle of your swing. : I might bring some bricks out to tie to my feet so I don’t fall over in the wind tomorrow.”

Blue and teammate Brett Iliff went into Wednesday’s final round of stroke-play qualifying tied for the lead with Zechariah Potter and Brandon Hermreck.

But after shooting a 4-over 75, they head into today’s match play as the No. 22 seed.

“It was definitely difficult – and you can just tell by our score that it was much more difficult than the first day,” Iliff said. “It was really tough to judge long shots. : It was just a good thing we played well yesterday. Obviously we didn’t play our best today, but overall we’ll be in it.”

Potter and Hermreck, meanwhile, had struggles of their own but fared better than Blue and Iliff.

Potter and Hermreck, the defending Four-Ball champs, followed up their 6-under 65 performance Tuesday with an even-par 71 Wednesday to earn the No. 3 seed in the bracket.

“Every time we birdied, we’d bogey the next hole, and it just really got frustrating,” Hermreck said. “We just could not do the right thing, and I’m just really frustrated right now. I’ve never had so many bogeys in a round.”

Golfers had to worry about the wind while the ball was in flight and also about the way it was altering putt attempts.

“Brett had like a five-footer on No. 10, we read it, and I guarantee that if there was no wind it would have gone in,” Blue said about their first hole of the day. “But the wind blew it, and we were like, ‘All right, we’ve got to start factoring that in.'”

Potter said the wind also made the greens themselves faster.

“You definitely had to really watch your speed because they were very, very quick,” Potter said. “I think they dried out a little bit. And they were definitely a little bit more firm, so on your chips and stuff some of them got away from you that hadn’t been getting away from you in the previous day.”

Potter and Hermreck will tee off at 9:30 a.m. today against No. 30 Kyle Thacker and Michael Elafros, while Iliff and Blue will start 30 minutes later in a match with No. 11 seed Matt Salome and Matt Lazzo in the final group of the first round.

“The 7:30 a.m. tee time tomorrow would have been rough because if you keep winning it would be 7:30 every day,” Hermreck said. “So with the 9:30, I can sleep in a little later.”

Lawrence residents Conrad Roberts and Chad Roesler earned the No. 1 seed by shooting a 69 during the morning session of qualifying to go with their 66 from Tuesday.

Roberts and Roesler have the honor of starting the day at 7:30 a.m. against No. 32 Todd Payne and Chad Judd. Payne-Judd was one of six teams tied at the cut of 173, but with only three seeds remaining they were able to survive a six-team playoff to nab a spot in the bracket.
