Puppy love

The Humane Society of the United States has its eye on Kansas - and not for the right reasons.

It was disappointing to read in Monday’s Journal-World that Kansas was one of eight states identified by the Humane Society of the United States as having an ongoing problem with cruel and disreputable dog breeders and sellers.

According to the story, the use of Internet Web sites has made it easier for so-called “puppy mills” to hide their inhumane breeding practices while still reaching a large number of people willing to buy puppies at bargain prices. The living conditions and treatment dogs receive at these kennels is hardly something you want to read about over your morning coffee.

There are, of course, many reputable, loving dog breeders in Kansas, and it’s unfortunate they are tarnished by horror stories from other kennels. The presence of Kansas on the national Humane Society’s alert list, however, is a good reminder for Kansans to check out breeders carefully before buying a pet and be skeptical of dogs offered for sale at low prices.

Better yet, people looking for a new pet might consider adopting an animal from the Lawrence Humane Society or other rescue organizations. An animal doesn’t have to be pure bred to offer a new owner plenty of love.
