Haas finally finding Florida to his liking

? Jay Haas, winless in Florida in PGA Tour-sanctioned competition, shot a 6-under 65 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Tom Purtzer after the second round of the Boeing Championship.

Haas, the Champions Tour money leader and the only two-time winner this year, had a bogey-free, 13-under 129 total on the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort’s Raven Golf Club course. Purtzer, the first-round co-leader after a 62, shot a 68.

Eduardo Romero, who also opened with a 62, was 11 under after a 69. Denis Watson, the Senior PGA Championship winner last week, shot a 67 to join Loren Roberts and Brad Bryant at 10 under. Roberts and Bryant also had 67s.

Haas has played 102 PGA Tour events in Florida and is making his sixth Champions Tour start in the Sunshine State.

“I grew up in the Midwest, never had seen Bermuda grass until I went South to school and pretty much hated Bermuda Florida courses for a long time,” said Haas, a St. Louis native who went to Wake Forest in North Carolina.

Haas, though, quickly dismissed the grass theory because he’s done well in Texas, which has similar turf.

“It’s just lack of talent and my timing wasn’t very good,” Haas joked.

Purtzer sympathized with him. He hasn’t won in Florida either, at least not in an official event. He teamed up twice with Juli Inkster to win the J.C. Penney Classic team event.

“Bermuda grass isn’t my cup of tea either,” Purtzer said. “Hopefully one of us will win tomorrow, one of us will clear that air.”

Purtzer had five birdies and two bogeys a day after matching the course record with his 62.

“It wasn’t as much fun as it was yesterday,” Purtzer said.

Romero had an eagle, four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey.

Roberts also had an up-and-down day. He trailed Haas, his playing partner, by just a stroke after 17, but double bogeyed the par-4 18th to fall three back.
