Success of condom program touted

? The city has distributed more than 10 million condoms since it launched its own “brand,” packaged in a wrapper with brightly colored, subway-style letters, the Health Department said Thursday.

The city has given away condoms for years to help reduce sexually transmitted diseases, but since the redesigned condoms were first unveiled three months ago, the distribution rate has more than doubled, officials said. Before the redesign, the city gave away about 1.5 million condoms each month.

“We’re getting New York City covered,” Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said in a statement. Health officials said about a third of the new condoms have gone to organizations in central Brooklyn, central and East Harlem and the South Bronx. Another 800,000 have been doled out in Chelsea and Clinton.

While about half the condoms have been distributed to health care, social service and community groups, the package also appears to have a kitschy appeal – the city says 5 percent of the condoms have been given to event planners. Another 4 percent were distributed to bars and clubs, and schools and universities accounted for 9 percent, officials said.
