Sudan ? Former rebels who signed a peace deal with the Sudanese government opened fire on a convoy of African Union peacekeepers after a road accident in Darfur, wounding three soldiers, officials said Thursday.

The incident underscores how precarious the situation remains in Darfur, where more than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million chased from their homes since fighting broke out in 2003 between ethnic African rebels and the pro-government janjaweed militia.

The incident occurred after a road accident involving an AU patrol and a convoy of former rebels from the Sudan Liberation Movement on Wednesday near Labado in South Darfur, the AU mission said in a statement. One SLM member was killed and nine were injured in the accident, the AU said.

The former rebels then opened fire on the peacekeepers, wounding three of them, the AU said. The U.N. mission in Sudan reported that 13 AU vehicles were captured by the SLM, along with weapons and the peacekeepers’ personal belongings.
