At least 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled

? A diesel fuel spill has prompted the Kansas Gas Service to look into possible changes, officials said.

Between 2,000 and 4,000 gallons of fuel spilled Sunday when a fitting on a pipe between a tank and pump burst at the Kansas Gas Service’s Salina division.

The fuel flowed through a storm drain and into Dry Creek before the Salina Hazardous Material Team stopped the flow by forming a U-shaped dam of absorbent pillows, soaking up the fuel.

Emergency vehicles visited neighborhoods near the spill, but no people were harmed, the city’s water supply wasn’t affected and there was little or no harm to wildlife, Salina Fire Department spokesman Troy Long said. Because monitors didn’t detect any hazardous gases in the area, residents weren’t evacuated, he said.

Kansas Gas Service spokesman James Lambert said the spill and the exact amount of fuel lost was being investigated.
