School offices lose power after accident

A concrete truck overturned at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Princeton Boulevard and McDonald Drive, severing a power line.

The driver of the Penny’s Concrete truck, Richard Rains, was traveling north on McDonald Drive when he lost control of the vehicle as it turned west onto Princeton Boulevard.

Rains, a 36-year-old Lawrence man, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, according to Lawrence Police Department spokesman Kim Murphree. His condition was not immediately available.

When the accident occurred, most residents and businesses in the area experienced a power outage of just a few seconds, said Gina Penzig, Westar spokesman.

Several other Westar customers, including Lawrence school district offices, were without power for about two hours. Power was restored around 3:30 p.m., Penzig said.
