The Kansas Board of Regents planned to ask Gov. Robert Docking and the Kansas Legislature to approve a record $126.7 million educational and general operating budget for the six state universities in the coming fiscal year.

State officials said there was nothing Lawrence could have done to make its application for swimming pool funds any better – it was just that surveys indicated the need for a pool here was not pressing enough to justify taking $203,000 from state coffers at present. Lawrence’s bid had been turned down even though there was no local municipal pool, causing officials to wonder if there had been flaws in their application.
