A Guatemalan doctor imprisoned in his native country by a military government for more than a month had been freed, a spokesman for the Guatemalan embassy in Washington told the Journal-World. Dr. Juan Jose Hurtado, a pediatrician who had earned a Kansas University master’s degree in anthropology in 1970, had been released, officials said. He had been charged with working with subversives against the government by treating “communists.” Hurtado claimed he had been treating only needy peasants when the charges had been filed. Friends in Lawrence had been working on the doctor’s behalf.
