The biggest share of spending cuts planned by academic units at Kansas University were to come from money earmarked for salaries for vacant faculty and staff positions that would have to remain unfilled for the time being. The cuts, requested by Gov. John Carlin, were to mean larger classes and heavier workloads for teachers. KU officials said they would do all they could to prevent anyone’s losing a job. Kansas revenues for the current fiscal year were to fall about $47 million short of expectations and Carlin had called for the 4 percent trim at all levels.
Shoppers turned out in huge numbers in the early hours of a torrid day for the annual sidewalk sales here. Temperatures began to rise toward the 90s early in the day and humidity was highly oppressive.
An 88-year-old Lawrence man was fatally injured in a two-vehicle accident south of Lawrence. The victim was Lawrence S. Ray, who was a passenger in a car driven by his sister-in-law.
