Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 22, 1907: “A new event, a horseshoe pitching tournament, has been added to the agenda for the Douglas County Fair this fall and entries and spectators are expected to come from miles around because such events are so popular. Some of the best pitchers in the Midwest are sure to come here. : There is concern that any new rising waters in the Kaw River will lead to breaks in the temporary fills here. There is no immediate danger but some fear new rains. : Early next week, university registrar George Foster and a corps of assistants will begin the huge task of distributing over the state of Kansas the KU catalogs of more than 500 pages. Some 30,000 of the catalogs are to be sent out and one problem is that there are separate catalogs for separate schools. The task is enormous. : Now there is evidence that the Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York will sue to cancel payment on a $100,000 death policy for Lawrence’s L.H. Perkins until the body is exhumed and determination can be made on the cause of death, originally ruled an accident.”
