Jays’ Towers mystifies Mariners

Blue Jays 1, Mariners 0

Toronto – Josh Towers outpitched Jeff Weaver in a fast-paced game, and Aaron Hill hit an RBI single in the second inning to lead Toronto past Seattle.

Three Blue Jays relievers combined for 21â3 perfect innings to complete the three-hitter. Jeremy Accardo earned his 15th save in 18 opportunities, ending a game that took only 2 hours, 6 minutes.

It was the second time Toronto won 1-0 in Towers’ past three starts. The Blue Jays beat Cleveland 1-0 on July 8, when he pitched eight innings.

Weaver (2-8) was the hard-luck loser in this one, allowing four hits over seven innings. He walked none and struck out four. The right-hander hasn’t won since beating Boston on June 25, a span of four starts.

The Mariners lost for only the fourth time in 12 games.

Towers (5-6) gave up three hits, struck out four and walked two over 62â3 innings. Casey Janssen got two outs and left-hander Scott Downs retired all three batters he faced before Accardo recorded the final two outs.

Red Sox 11, White Sox 2

Boston – Kason Gabbard allowed three hits in seven innings, and Coco Crisp drove in five runs.

Athletics 4, Orioles 3

Oakland, Calif. – Dan Haren gave up two early runs and then pitched like an All-Star, helping Oakland beat Baltimore.

Twins 5, Angels 2

Minneapolis – Joe Mauer hit a three-run, inside-the-park homer in the eighth inning to lift Minnesota.

Rangers 8, Indians 5

Arlington, Texas – Marlon Byrd keyed a five-run first inning with a two-run double and matched his career high with five RBIs.

Yankees 7-17, Devil Rays 3-4

New York – Shelley Duncan’s first major league homer capped New York’s five-run sixth inning, and Hideki Matsui also connected in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. In the second game, Alex Rodriguez hit career homer No. 497 and drove in four runs.
