How to make the most of summer garage sales

Summer garage sale season.

Whether you’re shopping in your annual subdivision sale or hitting an estate sale, there’s fun, adventure and, quite often, good deals to be had. First, some general tips:

¢ Wear comfortable shoes.

¢ Take a canvas bag to carry your treasures home.

¢ Buy only what you really love.

¢ Try not to pay full price – unless you’re at your neighbor’s garage sale. Haggling with the guy next door can cause ill will.

So what are some of the hottest buys of this garage sale season?

Just about anything from the 1950s through 1970s – dresses, dining sets, big ugly lamps – that’s inexpensive.

¢ Here’s cooking with you, kid. From refrigerator dishes to casseroles, brightly colored vintage Pyrex is practical and cheerful, just like Grandma.

¢ You’ll feel like the lawn ranger. Look for garden statues, birdbaths, wrought iron fencing and other interesting lawn ornaments and furnishings. With a coat of paint and a nice cushion, that vintage chair will look fabulous.

¢ It’s the little things in life. Purses, clunky earrings, aprons and other accessories really can make a difference to your outfit.

¢ You’re so crafty. Kitschy paint-by-numbers and amateurish oil paintings can be charming and, um, interesting. Doesn’t this remind you of your middle school art class?
