Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 20, 1907: “In view of reports of some persons here engaging in cruelty to animals, particularly livestock, we today run the local ordinance against such behavior, a law that has been strengthened and should be sternly enforced with heavy fines and jail time. . . . A Lawrence woman, Mrs. S.M. Whitzel, has just spent six months on the Isthmus of Panama and is now in Wichita visiting her son. She says work on the Panama Canal is progressing nicely. Her brother is making a digest of the laws of Panama and she visited him there.”
