A’s fill-in saves the day

Oakland, Calif. – Lenny DiNardo pitched seven shutout innings and the A’s ended their longest losing streak in nine years.

It was DiNardo’s most dominating performance of the season and came in just his second start since replacing injured Rich Harden in Oakland’s rotation.

“I’m not trying to fill Rich’s shoes by any means,” said DiNardo, who snapped a personal two-game losing streak. “When he’s on, he’s one of the best pitchers in the major leagues. I can strive for that but that’s not I’m thinking about.”

Cleveland – Mark Buehrle finally beat Cleveland for the first time in more than two years.

Yankees 6, Blue Jays 1

New York – Alex Rodriguez hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning and the surging Yankees won their fifth straight game.

Roger Clemens pitched out of trouble for six gritty innings to keep New York close.

Devil Rays 7, Angels 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Ty Wigginton homered and Carlos Pena hit a three-run double to back Scott Kazmir’s strong pitching and lead Tampa Bay to the victory.

Carl Crawford added two hits and his 28th stolen base of the season.

Tigers 3, Twins 2

Minneapolis – Magglio Ordonez homered and drove in all three runs against Johan Santana, ending Santana’s five-start winning streak.

Mariners 6, Orioles 5

Seattle – Adrian Beltre’s bases loaded walk with two outs in the eighth inning scored Jose Vidro with the eventual game-winner. J.J. Putz pitched a perfect ninth for his 28th save.
