Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 119, 1907: “An inmate at the Douglas County poor farm killed himself last evening by hanging himself from a tree. The act seems to have been brought on by despondency over ill health. The man was 57 years old. : Because Lawrence people were not generous enough and because Eudora people seem hostile, M. Robinson has abandoned his goal of building a rock road from Lawrence to Kansas City. Robinson said jealousy and suspicion have doomed the project and that it is impossible to complete at this time because of public attitudes. : Controversy continues over the will settlement of L.H. Perkins and his body may be exhumed to see if there is any merit to talk of suicide to collect sizable insurance funds for his family. So far, insurance firms have shown no doubts or suspicions but others call for more investigation. : Kansas will benefit from freeing itself from the oil trust and is helped by more attention to the use of natural gas.”
