Robertson sharp for Tigers

Tigers 1, Twins 0

Minneapolis – It looks like Nate Robertson’s tired pitching arm got a wake-up call.

The bespectacled left-hander allowed three hits in seven innings to outduel Matt Garza in Detroit’s victory over Minnesota.

Robertson (6-6), who spent 20 days on the disabled list in June because of a tired arm, struck out five and walked two to win for just the third time in 10 starts, and Todd Jones picked up his 24th save in 28 chances.

Curtis Granderson had three hits, and Magglio Ordonez capitalized on a key error by shortstop Jason Bartlett with an RBI single in the sixth to snap Minnesota’s four-game winning streak. Garza (1-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing one unearned run and three hits in seven innings for the Twins, who started an important series on the wrong foot.

Yankees 3, Blue Jays 2, 10 innings

New York – Robinson Cano singled home the winning run in the 10th inning after Toronto closer Jeremy Accardo balked home the tying run in a wild ninth, and New York rallied past the Blue Jays. Accardo’s meltdown cost Roy Halladay his 11th win after he stymied the Yankees for seven innings in an entertaining pitchers’ duel with Andy Pettitte.

Indians 6, White Sox 5, 11 innings

Cleveland – Ryan Garko hit a game-tying pinch-hit home run in the ninth and singled home the winning run in the 11th.

The Indians’ 28th come-from-behind win and 15th in their final at-bat kept them one game behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central.

Orioles 8, Mariners 3

Seattle – Jeremy Guthrie pitched six strong innings, and Jay Gibbons’ three-run homer gave Baltimore the lead.
