Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July14, 1907: “A new lawn mower has been purchased by the city to cut grass in parks and on other public grounds. It is a large machine drawn by a horse. : The state superintendent of insurance has issued an order forbidding the use of a new rate book making the rounds in Topeka. He says it prevents competition that can lead to the best rates for fire insurance. : The potato crop for the Kaw River Valley this year is far better than expected and could create the need for 1,400 rail cars to carry away the crops. There are 3,500 acres planted on the north side of the river and another 3,500 acres on the south. It is estimated the average yield will be 125 bushels to the acre and that the valley will turn out more than 840,000 bushels in all.”
