Stacy Cope, Shari Johnson and Gerry Livers attended the 116th Continental Congress of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, conducted June 27-July 1 in Washington, D.C.

They are members of the organization’s Betty Washington Chapter, which meets in Lawrence. Livers serves as the group’s regent, and Johnson is the registrar.

The NSDAR is participating in the Wounded Warrior Project, which delivers backpacks to the bedsides of wounded service members who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The NSDAR’s new president general, Linda Gist Calvin, of California, formerly was a member of a DAR chapter in Topeka. Her project will be to restore the organization’s buildings.

Shirley Coupal is the new Kansas state regent, and her theme is “At Home on the Plains.”

On July 3, the local chapter presented a plaque recognizing the contributions of former member Fay Talley to the Veterans Committee of the DAR. Talley, who served on the committee for many years, died Oct. 21.

Jerome Hanson, commander of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14, received the plaque. Sammy Cope, former state regent, and other chapter members attended the event.

¢The Pilot Club of Lawrence met July 9 and heard a presentation by Sgt. Susan Hadl, of the Lawrence Police Department. Hadl spoke about safety for women. The club also approved its budget for the upcoming year.

¢The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at eight tables directed by Chris Lane on June 27. The North-South winners were led by Elle Patton and Bobby Patton. Second place went to Klee Zaricky and Betty Collier, followed by Lois Clark and Catherine Blumenfeld.

The East-West players were led by Dave Piro and Paul Heitzman, followed by Sally Taylor and Shari Krentzel, who placed second in A and first in B. Eldon Herd and Mona Bell took third in A and second in B, with Barbara McCorkle and Mary Joyce placing first in C.

The club celebrated July 4th with a stratified game of duplicate bridge. The game used the Howell movement and was directed by Chris Lane. First place in A and B went to Sally Davis and Catherine Blumenfeld, followed by Shari Krentzel and Kathryn Loseke. Third place in A went to Virginia Seaver and Madelyn Jenks, followed by Harry Shaffer and Grant Sutton.

¢The Friday Afternoon Bridge Club conducted a special qualification game for the North American Pairs competition July 6. The game was a stratified Mitchell movement directed by Virginia Seaver. In North-South, Harry Shaffer and Lynn Hui placed first in A and B, followed by Jean Otney and Wanda Durbin. Judy Hildreth and Jay Hildreth placed third in A and B, with Don Daugherty and Harry Talley coming in first in C.

The East-West pairs were led by Paul Heitzman and David Piro at first in A, followed by Lois Clark and Catherine Blumenfeld at second in A and first in B and C. Virginia Seaver and Sally Taylor were third in A and second in B, with Mona Bell and Madelyn Jenks at third in B and second in C.

¢The Monday Evening Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement directed by Virginia Seaver on July 9. The North-South pairs were led by Clyde Romer and Jeane Landry at first in A, followed by Harry Shaffer and Lois Clark at second in A. Third in A went to Lois Jones and Jeffrey Nash, followed by Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle. First in B and C went to Terry Tolar and Lynn Hui, with Chris Lane and Shirley Reese at second in B.

The East-West pairs were led by Virginia Seaver and Paul Heitzman at first in A, followed by Donna Johnson and James Masilamani. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley placed third in A and first in B and C, with Barbara Merriam and Dorothy Netson taking fourth in A and second in B and C.
