Birds’ Bedard baffles Chisox

Baltimore – Erik Bedard pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, and Nick Markakis and Corey Patterson homered off Mark Buehrle to lead Baltimore past Chicago.

Bedard (8-4) struck out seven to increase his AL-leading total to 156. The left-hander walked two and allowed only three runners past first base in extending his run of scoreless innings to 16.

In his last start against Chicago, on July 2, Bedard did not receive a decision after yielding six runs, five hits and four walks in 52â3 innings. He is 4-0 in his last five starts.

Bedard outdueled Buehrle (6-5), who was pitching for the first time since signing a $56 million, four-year contract extension on Sunday.

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Scott Kazmir allowed four hits in six innings to outpitch Roger Clemens and help Tampa Baybeat New York for the left-hander’s first win at home in more than a year.

Anaheim, Calif. – Casey Kotchman hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Gary Matthews Jr., the former Ranger who signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the Angels, legged out a double to left-center that skipped past shortstop Michael Young.

Ron Mahay relieved Joaquin Benoit (3-3), and Matthews advanced on a groundout before Kotchman won it.
