Chris and Kristen Hase, Emporia, announce the birth of their daughter, Ava Marie Hase, born June 10, 2007, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.

Ava has a brother, Ian, 2.

Her maternal grandparents are Dale and Mary Mitchell, Baldwin City. Paternal grandparents are Dale and Vicki Hase, Americus. Great-grandparents are Luther and Vivian Hase, Allen, and Mary Gordon, Lawrence.

¢Several area students were recognized at William Jewell College’s Honors Convocation in Liberty, Mo.

Lea Hogsett, Baldwin City, received the Charles F. J. Newlon Award for an outstanding senior biology major. Jenilee Morrison, Lawrence, received the Dr. Judith A. Dilts Award for an outstanding senior biology major; and Jessica Nichols, also of Lawrence, received the Olive E. Thomas Biology Undergraduate Research Scholarship for a student with outstanding potential in research and the Monte Harmon Award for an outstanding senior biology major.

Hogsett and Nichols also were named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the spring 2007 semester. They earned a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

¢Several area students in Baker University’s College of Arts and Sciences were named to the Dean’s List for earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average during the spring 2007 semester.

¢Nicolas Birney, a Lawrence High School student, received an AFS 2007 Youth Ambassadors Arabic Summer Language Institute Scholarship, a distinction shared by only 25 students nationwide.

Almost 200 students throughout the U.S. were nominated for full scholarships to a summer study program in Cairo, Egypt.

The program is sponsored by AFS Intercultural Programs/ USA and the Educational and Cultural Exchange Bureau of the U.S. Department of State.

¢Demi Renault, Lawrence, is studying voice this summer at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Mich. The camp is for aspiring artists in grades 3 through 12. Renault studies voice in Lawrence with Vanessa Thomas.

¢Edward Patterson, Law-rence, received the Joyce Jeltz High School Achievement Award from the Black Faculty and Staff Council at Kansas University. Patterson graduated from Lawrence High School and is an incoming freshman at KU. He plans to study electrical engineering and computer science.

The council also presented the Unit Award to KU’s School of Law for its commitment to diversity. Pamela Scott, associate director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, received the Hobart Jackson Service Award for outstanding service toward African and African-American students and faculty.

¢Hadley Grace De Hoff, Tonganoxie, and Mac Kenzie Flory, Baldwin City, exhibited Angus cattle at the 2007 National Junior Angus Show, conducted this week in Tulsa, Okla.

De Hoff and Flory are junior members of the American Angus Association. The National Junior Angus Show is the largest single-breed registered beef cattle show in the world.

¢Megan Mercer, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the spring 2007 term at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. She earned a grade-point average between between 3.25 and 3.64.

¢Renae Saathoff, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the 2006-07 spring term at AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa. She earned a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.79 and is majoring in realtime reporting-caption/ CART services.

¢Hutchinson Community College announces the Dean’s Honor Roll for the spring 2007 semester, which recognizes students who earned a grade-point average from 3.5 to 3.999. Area students named to the list include Randall DeMersseman, Baldwin City; Brandon Welch, De Soto; and Jerome Younger, Lawrence.

¢Several area undergraduates at Kansas University have been named University Scholars for 2007. Area students include Marie Hull and Shuan Sheila Tsau. Hull is a sophomore in Spanish, math and economics, and Tsau is a sophomore in psychology and human biology.

The University Scholars Program gives promising KU undergraduates academic experiences that provide intellectual challenge and enhanced opportunities.

¢Kansas State University announces students who received semester honors and graduation honors during the spring 2007 semester.

Lawrence students who received graduation honors include Melissa Bowers, cum laude; Julie Henry, summa cum laude (multiple degrees); and Jenna Mcgovern, magna cum laude.

Students who received semester honors rank in the top 10 percent of their classes in their respective colleges and were enrolled in at least 12 semester hours of graded coursework.
