Safety Break to give motorists driving tips

The Kansas Motor Carriers Association will give motorists near Ottawa a break from driving this weekend – but not a break from learning.

The association will sponsor its annual Safety Break from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The association will set up a tent with refreshments on southbound Interstate 35 near Ottawa at mile marker 174.

“The main reason we do this is because in the summer it’s really hot, so we just are there to give the motorists a break,” said Gary Davenport, safety director for the association.

Davenport also said people can learn about driving safely and attentively, and how to safely share the road with trucks. He said truck drivers will demonstrate blind spots and other dangerous aspects of sharing the road with truck drivers.
