From the Lawrence Daily World for July 10, 1907: “A federal grand jury in Chicago today returned an indictment against the Santa Fe Railway alleging it granted rebates amounting to $35,000 to the United States Sugar and Land Co. Before it is over, the fines could top one million dollars. : Recently Ottawa leaders went to Baldwin to survey its electric light plan and went home impressed and hopeful of duplicating such a facility in Ottawa. : Lawrence automobile enthusiasts are having visions of auto trips from here to St. Louis over a permanent and smooth rock road within a few years. The scheme is to complete the road from here to Kansas City and then extend it on to St. Louis. The state of Missouri has authorized experts to draw up such a road and the future looks bright. : The Ringling Brothers Circus presented, as expected, outstanding shows here and left many excited and enriched. : The U.S. battleship tonnage in the Pacific will be 265,000 to 190,000 for the Japanese, who seem uneasy about the deployment.”
