Bicyclist struck on Lawrence Avenue

Injuries considered minor

July 9, 2007, 3:29 p.m. Updated July 9, 2007, 4:00 p.m.

A 10-year-old Lawrence boy on a bike was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries this afternoon following an accident with a vehicle at Lawrence Avenue and Applegate Court.

Officials said the boy was riding his bike east on Applegate Court and failed to stop or yield the right of way to a 79-year-old Lawrence woman driving south on Lawrence Avenue. The woman was not injured.

The accident occurred about 2:40 p.m. Lawrence Police are still investigating whether the 10-year-old was wearing a helmet.

Infomed - I agree. It must have been the fault of the vehicle, huh? It just didn't get out of the way of the bicycle. :) Nuf said!

So, do you think a one or two ton vehicle has the right to run over a bicyclist even if it his fault?

"No further information was available"

Nuff info for the know-nothings to make stupid comments.

Perhaps we need to take a look at driving laws in bicycle-friendly places -- any vehicle striking a bicycle is automatically at fault, but you can get a DUI on a bike, too! (In Germany, anyway...) Even if everyone drives/rides responsibly, accidents will still happen.

Nobody said the car ran over the kid. Maybe the car was already in the intersection when the kid ran the stop sign and failed to yield the right away. It's not a stretch to say bikers aren't aware of there surroundings at all times too.

NO! build a roundabout there, that'll fix the obvious traffic problem! especially one designed for 79-yo drivers and 10-yo bikers! hehehe

Humm this would seem like a quick investigation even for the LPD ;-)

The 79 year old driver was my mother, who is a very sharp woman with a spotless driving record, not some senile old bat. She does not talk on her phone, eat or take part in any other careless acts while driving. This accident devastated her, that little boy could have been any of her own twelve grandchildren. The little boy who was not wearing a helmet, ran into her damaging her car significantly. We are very grateful that he was not seriously injured.
