Kansas Gov. Robert Docking said during a visit to Lawrence that he was applying for an additional $2.9 million in federal disaster relief funds for uninsured storm damage in Finney County on May 31. The community had been badly ravaged by vicious weather.

Edwin R. Phelps III , 26, was back in the U.S. after 117 missions as a Navy carrier bomber pilot in Vietnam. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Phelps, formerly of Lawrence, and was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. He had been visiting his grandparents in Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. Rice Phelps.
