Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 6, 1907: “The towers of the Baptist Church which have been in a dilapidated condition since the big windstorm of two years ago are being repaired in a substantial manner and will be surmounted with battlements. : Current business reports indicate the Kansas crops are excellent, farmers are doing well and are spending freely. Prospects look good for wheat, cotton and corn since there recently has been almost ideal growing weather. : There is concern here for a woman in the poor farm who cannot take care of herself. She was recently taken home by a son who neglects her terribly. The old woman is helpless and something needs to be done. : The Kansas division of the American Motor League has accepted our town’s invitation to hold its area meeting here this September and we will be able to see some of the finest motor vehicles on the planet. It will be an extremely popular attraction. : Several drunks last night stole A.J. Martin’s buggy and did a lot of joyriding. Both the horse and buggy have been recovered in decent shape, the drunks arrested and fined.”
