Severe weather warning ends, fireworks on as scheduled
Despite earlier severe weather, Gary Saathoff of Lawrence Jaycees said at 4 p.m. today that the fireworks show at Burcham Park, Second and Indiana streets, Lawrence, is still on.
Fireworks should start around 9:30 p.m.
Saathoff said organizers would cancel the show in the event of thunderstorms and severe weather, but does not expect to do so.
He said any final decision would be made around 9 p.m. in the event of inclement weather.
Tornado sirens were activated at 3:30 p.m. today for Lecompton, Lawrence and west Douglas County after a funnel cloud was sighted near K-10 and Wakarusa. The funnel cloud soon disappeared and the sirens stopped.
A severe thunderstorm watch is on until 10 p.m.
As of 4:45 p.m., more than 350 Douglas County residences were without power, Westar Energy spokeswoman Erin Dehn said.
Some 228 customers were without power in the area between 19th and 20th streets and Harper to Massachusetts Street. The power failures, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., were suspected to be storm related.
Another 91 customers were without power in the vicinity of Hwy. 40 and North 2nd Street. The power failures were also presumed to be weather related, Dehn said.
Crews were en route to both locations and other scattered smaller outage areas.
More information as it becomes available.
