Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 4, 1907: “The old shack which is the city jail is actually going to get some attention after the holiday period. It should be totally rebuilt. : There is a movement afoot to bring land clear out to Haskell into the city limits. There are doubters, who say the costs of lighting, pavement and such would be too difficult to justify. Frank Peairs, who is asking for the extension of the city limits, is a brother of H.B. Peairs, superintendent at Haskell. : So far this has been a glorious July 4 observance, with no injuries reported and people apparently using good sense in the use of fireworks. “
