Aggies halt Sooners’ streak

Norman, Okla. – After his rugged Texas A&M team ended Oklahoma’s remarkable Big 12 winning streak with one last lunging rejection, coach Gary Blair had to ask a question of his own: “Why does defense always have to be ugly?”

Morenike Atunrase scored 18 points before leaving with an injury, and Danielle Gant leaped to block Kendra Moore’s last-second three-pointer, securing No. 21 Texas A&M’s 54-52 upset of sixth-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday.

“Gant came out of nowhere and did her Batman act,” Blair said. “That was just a great block because I’ve seen them hit too many shots like that.”

The loss ended Oklahoma’s record-setting 24-game win streak against Big 12 foes, which dated to a loss to Texas in the 2005 Big 12 tournament. It also ended a run of eight straight wins for the Sooners.

Texas A&M forward Morenike Atunrase goes to the basket against Oklahoma. The Aggies upset the Sooners, 54-52, Saturday in Norman, Okla.

“Oklahoma raised the bar, and now people are getting better,” Blair said.

No. 13 Baylor 66, Oklahoma State 55

Stillwater, Okla. – Bernice Mosby scored 23 points and had nine rebounds, and Baylor pulled away in the final minutes.

Rachel Allison added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Bears, who won their third straight after back-to-back losses earlier this month to Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Oklahoma State committed 19 turnovers and shot 31 percent from the field.

Texas Tech 49, No. 24 Texas 48

Lubbock, Texas – Alesha Robertson hit a three-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining to lift Texas Tech.

Texas went up 48-41 on Brittainey Raven’s three with 2:07 left before Robertson hit the first of two from beyond the arc to cut the margin to 48-44.

The Longhorns did not score again.

Raven and Carla Cortijo scored 10 points to lead Texas.
