Seahawk girls roll; boys lose at buzzer

Bria Phipps scored 19 points to lead three scorers in double figures, and the Seabury Academy girls basketball team came to life after halftime to secure a 50-31 home victory Friday night against Kansas City (Mo.) University Academy.

Melissa Burch and Jen Crawford each scored 11 points for the Seahawks (4-6), who owned just a 12-9 lead at the half before finding the scoring touch in the final two frames.

“I challenged them at halftime to come out more aggressive, rebound the ball, get position and take care of the ball,” Seabury coach Nick Taylor said.

Phipps answered the call from a scoring standpoint, while Burch took care of business in the paint, pulling down 23 rebounds.

“Bria Phipps has come on the last two game on her scoring and is hitting everything,” Taylor said.

“The team is really coming together. We’re rolling, and we’re looking pretty good. Hopefully we can take this into the last half of the season and into regionals.”

Seabury will play host to Williamsburg on Monday.

K.C. University Academy boys 63, Seabury 60

Seabury’s Bill Gibbs connected on a four-point play with five seconds left, but University Academy’s Byran Wells hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift Unviersity Academy.

Seabury (2-8) rallied from an 11-point third-quarter deficit.

“We played solid defense,” Seabury coach Matthew Downing Jr. said.

The Eagles trailed by four until Gibbs banked home a three-pointer with five seconds left and was fouled on the play. Gibbs sank the free throw to tie the score at 60 and set the stage for Wells’ heroics.

Seabury (2-8) will be home Monday to face Williamsburg.
