Cordley School won the second-place trophy in the K-5 division, and Southwest Junior High claimed the third-place trophy in K-12 at the Rockhurst High School chess tournament Jan. 20 in Kansas City, Mo. The top individual finisher in K-12 was Central Junior High’s Roy Wedge, who earned the second-place medal. Other medalists from Lawrence were, in K-12: Kellen Cross, SWJH, sixth; Thomas Clark, SWJH, seventh; and Peter Lesslie, SWJH, 17th. Local K-8 medalists were Luke Lesslie, Quail Run, 11th; and Zach Curran, Cordley, 20th. K-5 medalists were Eddie Wilson, Cordley, fifth; Roscoe Bradt, Cordley, 12th; Jake Burdett, Cordley, 17th; Byron McClelland, 26th; and Jonathan Lesslie, Quail Run, 27th.

¢Eric and Rebecca Wagner, Baldwin City, announce the birth of their daughter, Delaney Kate Wagner, born Jan. 10, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Her brother is Brody, 22 months. Maternal grandparents are Steve and Lori Myrick, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Don Wagner, Lawrence, and David and Carolyn Alexander, Manhattan. Great-grandparents are Gene and Glenna Myrick, and Travis and Jean Hergert, all of Liberal, and Woodrow and Dorothy Olson, Webster, S.D.

¢Jessica Foulke, Lawrence, was named to the Honor Roll at McPherson College for the fall 2006 semester. To qualify, students must earn a grade point average of 3.55 or higher.

¢Mike Gillman and Jaime Sauer announce the birth of their son, Landon Michael Gillman, born Jan. 15, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He has two sisters, Mika Gillman, 5, and Sora Gillman, 3.

Maternal grandparents are Bruce and Diana Sauer, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Lonnie and Lynda Gillman, Bartlesville, Okla.

¢Ty and Megan Finch, Garden City, announce the birth of their son, Evan Ty Finch, born Jan. 1, 2007, in Garden City. Evan was the New Year’s baby in Garden City. He weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Kermit and Margaret Kalb, Wellsville. Paternal grandparents are Jerry and Ila Finch, Garden City. Great-grandparents are John and Bettie Lou Metsker, Baldwin City, and Loretta Staley, Garden City.

¢Trey and Jody Meyer, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Reece Nicholas Meyer, born Jan. 2, 2007, in Overland Park. His brothers are Drew, 4, and Tate, 2. His maternal grandparents are Melba and Gene Lamb, Kingman. Paternal grandparents are Kaye and Bob Meyer, Towanda. Great-grandparents are Allene and Jerry Thomason, Amarillo, Texas.

¢Brianne W. Myers, a seventh-grader at Central Junior High School, won the school’s National Geographic Bee on Jan. 16. Brianne answered oral questions on geography to win the competition, which is the first round in the 19th annual bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Brianne and other school winners then took a written geography test, and up to 100 of the top scorers in Kansas will be eligible to compete in the state bee, set for March 30.

¢Matthew Bowlin, Baldwin City, received an honorable mention for his work at North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit for the fall 2006 semester. To receive an honorable mention, students must earn a grade point average between 3.0 and 3.79.

Rachel McCarthy James, Lawrence, was named an honor student for the fall 2006 semester at Hollins University in Roanoke, Va. To attain the distinction, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

James, a graduate of Free State High School, is a junior majoring in English and political science. She is the daughter of Susan McCarthy and Bill James, Lawrence.
