KU gave ex-coach six-figure severance

Former Kansas University women’s basketball coach Marian Washington received a severance package worth approximately $156,148 in the year after she retired, according to information obtained by the Journal-World through an open-records request.

As part of an agreement made between Washington and the Kansas University Athletic Corp., Washington was considered an employee of KU for the fiscal year 2004-05, when she was paid $10,781.67 per month for responsibilities “requested and assigned by the Director of Athletics or his designee.”

While coaching her 31st season at KU, Washington took a leave of absence in earl 2004 for medical reasons, then retired near the end of the season. She was replaced in the interim by Lynette Woodard until coach Bonnie Henrickson was hired away from Virginia Tech in spring 2004.
