Report says oil spill off Lebanon is contained
United Nations ? Environmental crews have largely contained an oil spill caused by Israeli airstrikes off the coast of Lebanon during last summer’s war with Hezbollah, a U.N. report said.
The report, released Tuesday in Germany, said although contamination levels along the coast are back to normal, environmental challenges remain elsewhere in the country from the 34-day conflict.
The oil spill had been described as the country’s worst-ever environmental catastrophe.
It was caused when Israeli warplanes struck the Jiyeh power plant in mid-July, unleashing up to 110,000 barrels of fuel oil into the Mediterranean Sea.
About two-thirds of Lebanon’s coast was affected by the oil slick, which extended about 95 miles and had reached Syria’s shoreline to the north.
