Committee endorses Sebelius’ appointments

The Senate Ways and Means Committee has unanimously endorsed Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ appointments of Kathy Greenlee as the secretary on aging and Don Jordan as secretary of social and rehabilitation services.

They will be confirmed if the entire Senate approves.

Despite the 9-0 vote Friday, Jordan got an earful from committee members who have heard complaints about SRS.

Sen. Donald Betts, D-Wichita, said he visited the department’s Wichita office and, “I was treated like a second-class citizen until they found out who I was.”

And Sen. Jean Schodorf, R-Wichita, said she was concerned employee burnout because of high case loads.

“I’m also concerned with patients falling through the cracks,” she said. “We’ve all heard the stories of someone being put off for months and months until something terrible happens.”
